Amazing finds per usual! Seems like a brilliant vacation.
I'm not sure how you blagged some time away and managed all those shops, roller skates? I've become a bit fonder of Brazilian music partly because i found a load cheap i now have enough 'world' music that they are allocated their own expedit cube. Sorry but the August bank holiday I'll be going back in time several centuries so won't be able to make that date which is a shame as I'd clearly like to see how tall/short Mazzy is (take a tape measure) and can he hold his beer? Expecting maybe don't show him the blue oyster bar either.
That’s a shame, Martin. We’ll have to sort out a meet up for later in the year. Enjoy your weekend in days of yore 👍
I normally disappear and find a nice brothel when the wife gets board of me whilst on holiday 😜😷😇
What's the mustache guys channel? Super interesting dude.
Hi Joe. Paul doesn’t currently have a channel. He’ll be doing another video with us soon though. Cheers
I was in Lisbon in September & would recommend a look around the flea market on a Saturday. Carbono at 6B Rua Telhal was the best priced of the bricks & mortar shops I visited. I was travelling with Ryanair & their parsimonious baggage allowance meant that I couldn't buy too much & so, like John, I was limiting myself to records that I was unlikely to turn up in England but picked up some good Brazilian vinyl.
Hi Stewart. I wanted to go to Carbano but it was closed while I was in Lisbon. If I get there again, I’ll definitely check out the flea market. Thanks for the tip! Cheers. John
Nice finds! As a lover of Brazilian music I'm keen to get over to see what I can find. Question: How did you transport them back? I'm guessing inside a mailer in your carry on? Love the vid!
Hi. I always take a record bag with me as carry on. If I buy more, I put in my case in a mailer. Cheers. John
Lucky you getting away from all the rain in blighty, John. My eyes popped at 4:07 when I spotted that Experiencia LP up on a shop wall at 100€. I got it for around £1.50 in a charity shop.🤣
Hi Bruce. You had a bargain there! I saw that record twice while I was in Lisbon. Both times it was priced at 100 euros. Cheers. John
Some killer tunes found again John - always good to watch you on your travels 🎉
Cheers Gav!
Tabato Records looked like a shop that could definitely accommodate your interests John. I did not see any metal or punk. But I did see some very interesting soul, funk, Latin and some disco too am I right? I went to the Neat Records website. If you click on the See Outside box you can see albums by The Smiths and Zeppelin in the front window. A tough Smiths album to find to boot! The Smith Best I. That looks like a great shop. Congrats on landing Funkadelic's debut. Excellent update J. Superb intro~ Rob/Boston
Hi Rob. You’re right. Neat Records had lots of good rock and indie stuff. I was really looking for soul stuff though so didn’t check out those bins perhaps as thoroughly as I should have. I was really pleased with the Funkadelic though. Take care. Cheers. John
Wow that was a great bunch of rockers, really nice finds with great needle drops. Cheers
Was that Irma Thomas record in the first crate, first store a re-issue. You went pass it so fast :). I am looking for that one. Amazing soul record. Need an original tho.
Hi Magnus. The Irma was a reissue. I have an original, which is why is went past it. Cheers. John
Ho John, some great finds... another city I've always wanted to visit too. That doces barbaros record is the one Gal Costa LP that seems to elude me... the day may come!... some great brazilian LPs in the flick through, but not cheap for sure. All the best Laurence
Hi Laurence. There was so much Brazilian stuff there that I didn’t know. I could’ve done with a couple of days there just to listen to some of those records. The Gal Costa album is really nice. It’s just a shame that it’s an edited version of the Brazilian release. Cheers. John
First two were absolute bangers mate especially the second tune, that was a great dance track 👍 I noticed you flicked past the single on the Happy People label. Its a great soul,Ska,reggae,Dub type label and the two best bands to feature on it are Pama International & the Phoenix City Allstars. I've got plenty of stuff by them....top notch 👍👍👍
Hi Nick. I have a couple of singles on Pama International. I need to check out more though. I really like what I’ve heard. Cheers
"I didn't expect to do any record shopping." I call BS on this !!! 🙂
😂
Spotted a record I'm after on the wall in Peak-a-Boo Records. The self titled album by Bamboo. It's an odd mix of country, psych and funk. It goes for a bit if cash, but to be honest there's only a couple of belter tunes on it. Hope you has fun. Hed
Great stuff John. I like the idea of the missus actually telling you to go and buy records.
It's weird how Funkadelic records never show up in the uk.
I think Jo is just glad to get shot of me for a few hours so regularly suggests that I go off and look for records. The secret to a good marriage 😂
"Thanks from the Lisbon Tourist Office. We wonder if you could edit out saying the records are rather expensive? It's not good for business." ( Translated from Portuguese)
🤣🤣🤣
I was there in Apr/May 2023 and went to 3 stores. Can't remember the names, but 1 was huge, 1 was small, and 1 (which was upstairs) was very disappointing. Coming from the US the price seemed high but they may have been because of the dollar vs. Euro. Cheers!
Oh what a lovely wife. You found some killers John, but those prices! Not surprised really. Because of that I find myself cruising the cheapie bins, always find surprising stuff. Is a trip to Brazil in the cards? That would be amazing. Cheers.
Hey. The prices were eye watering at times. I was happy with what I paid for the handful of records I brought back though. I’d love to go to Brazil. That’s a long, long way off though. Perhaps one day…..
Hey hey John always like the way you put the record store footage together 👏🏻the first store I really felt a good vibe there and the album covers all looked fantastic!! Whew the prices in that one store WOW!! Thanks for sharing your pickups and always the great needle drops….keep on soulin’ my friend😎🎶🙏🏻✨☮️☀️🌈🎸🎹🎤🥁🍺🎶
Lovely views of the Belem Tower and atop the St George Castle! Also noticed you went to the Pavillion area, I wonder if there are record stores in that part of town. I've actually walked from the airport all the way to that riverbank, but didn't see any back in 2022.
Hey. I loved Lisbon. It really is a beautiful city. I didn’t find any record stores in the Pavilion area. There are plenty to find in the city though. And walking between stores is great way to see some of the less obvious parts of the city. Cheers!
Hahaha ooo lordy your wife suggested you go crate digging???? Awesome made me smile 😊here in the US on a very gloomy day thank you 🙏🏻✨🎶
Watching The Detectives was a bit of a reggae vibe.
The pianist strikes again, excellent 👏
Thanks very much 👍👍
Good picks as the Associates & early Robert Parlmer were never chart topping acts but they were certainly loved and respected by people who looked beyond the commercial top 40 acts
Cheers!

Love Billy Mackenzie by the way! Massive operatic voice he had could definitely make a drama out of crisis!!!!
Ha! I couldn’t have put it better myself 😀
Had that rage hard single when I was a kid! I kept think Holly was saying “it’s a lot of shite” straight after the rage hard line in the chorus?!
Must check out Associates Perhaps LP as I have the earlier brilliant records. I do hope there is a reappraisal of Billy Mackenzie! Can’t remember if that Frankie second album was a flop. I was still living in Liverpool at the time and locals were amazed at how big they became.
The Billy McKenzie reappraisal starts here, John! 😀
The beginning of the Frankie song sounds a lot like ABC.
That's because they were both produced by Trevor Horn
Trevor Horn certainly knew what he was doing. So many great records!
Totally agree that Billy Mackenzie will someday be re-appraised for his serious talent....I adored him. Perhaps is a cracking album and my favourite off it is Thirteen Feelings......wonderful!!!
Ooh, yes. Thirteen Feelings is a great tune 👍
I love the version of kites on that associates album. There's an earlier version they did as 39 Lyon street. Associates have so many great songs including some of the unreleased material on the recent reissued versions. I think there's an instrumental of breakfast somewhere - edit it's called breakfast alone
I’ll check out that instrumental of Breakfast. Thanks for the heads up!
I liked Robert Palmer in the 70’s but I’ve never listened to any of his 80’s albums.
His albums can be patchy because of the mix of styles, but there’re always some gems on them 👍
Spent the bulk of 85/86 with Sulk & Perhaps permanently on play via a tape Walkman plus, the added bonus of all those additional tracks exclusive to Cassettes.
Really excellent choices here, thanks for sharing 🙂. I seem to see that Associates album all the time in the wild, but have never bothered with it. I might need to change my tune after that snippet (bet I never see it now!!).
The associates are my favourite 80’s group !!!! Billy has the best vocal range out of any 80’s group ! Very underrated impo !!! Breakfast is definitely the best track from that lp !!!
If WTTP was the orgy of excess and sexual euphoria then Liverpool is the morning after, waking up and realizing that the world isn't as wonderful as you first thought it was. Love this record. 'Kill The Pain' blows the walls out. Thanks for showing this, dude!!
johnny and mary. sneaking sally down the alley. excellent vocal;s great video
Good choices John - was Billy MacKenzie the William of William it was really nothing fame ?
Was just thinking this myself. I believe he was.
Sulk was my favourite album of 1982 I remember it was big during the world cup in Spain. No is my favourite track. I play Perhaps on occasion & its aged well. Poor Billy had depression rampant in his family & fell victim to it. He had the rare gift of a golden voice like Jeff Buckley.
Hey John coincidentally I picked up fourth drawer down by the associates at the boot sale yesterday it’s excellent though I was familiar with some of the tracks as it’s a early singles compilation .. love Robert palmer I’ve all his early albums and Fgth are a band I’ve always had lots of time for cheers John 👍
Hi John - Breakfast is a great song. I came across it on the Martin Rushent Ace comp last year. Rage Hard sounded better than I remember...cheers Dale
Hi John, great video. Have you seen this amazing clip of Billy McKenzie doing 'Wild is the Wind'? Not sure about the syrup though. ruclips.net/video/A2wtJCDzVu0/видео.htmlsi=2N-aMpBNWQ08fzx-
You sound just like mix master Phil Harding from PWL. 🤗🤠🙋🕵
I’d be lying if I said that everyone says that to me 😂
You may also like ShyTalk and there 1985 only album with there hit Excuse Me. 🤗
Hello John👋🏻 liked the Frankie you played 🎶powerful🎶 cheers!
Hi Lis. I like how over the top the Frankie tune is. It sounds huge! Cheers. John
Sounds like Robert Palmer hired Tom Waits' drummer. Interesting tune. We're talking sophisi-pop with the Associates. I can practically hear the turtleneck sweaters and cappuccinos. I like the sound of Frankie...without the Trevor Horn production. More off the cuff and immediate. Johnson's voice just cuts through. Well done.
I’m quite partial to a bit of turtleneck pop. It’s all very grown up, I know, but Billy’s vocal is cracking on that tune. The whole arrangement really suits his voice. It’s quite different from the rest of the album. I wonder whether he should’ve used that as a template for the record rather than the 80’s synth pop bombast?
Great collection there! I’m also a big fan of Dodgy and the Bluetones, got a soft spot for Gene too. I’ve made a video showing some of my Britpop singles too. Do have a look if you get a moment!
Chi sound orchestra windy city. Norman Jay used to play it as the intro to his legendary kiss fm show when it became legal circa 1990 nice to hear...
Cool stuff John. Wire 45's are hard to find at a good price - I saw a copy of 'I am the Fly' in Oxfam a few years go for about sixty quid. Peter Perrett was in a band with Glenn Tilbrook in the early days. I saw EXTC at Shrewsbury last weekend and they were fab - incredibly version of Towers of London. Btw, I've just finished reading Nick Kent's last book 'Apathy for the Devil' which is his memoir of the 1970s, year on year. It covers a lot of punk territory including a lot of great detail about his awful relationship with the Pistols- great read, can recommend.
You should document your trips to car boot sales , videos like that tend to get a lot of views.😉
